The Bible says that love “…does not envy…” (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Envy is resentful jealousy over what others have. The way to combat envy is to be content with what God has given us, whether that’s possessions, talents, position, etc.
When my husband and I initially learned of our first-born child’s handicap, I was envious of parents who had normal children. It took time for me to see the blessings in our situation, and to be genuinely content with our circumstances and genuinely happy for those who had normal children.
I also have to beware of letting admiration turn into envy. There’s nothing wrong with admiring another person’s talents, character traits, or achievements, and rejoicing with them or being inspired by them. But if I find myself wishing I were like them to the point of having resentful feelings, then I need to confess that to the Lord and be cleansed.
I once felt a tinge of jealousy when I thought that a particular person admired someone else more than me. God healed me of that, but I realized how subtly envy can sneak in there when my focus wanders away from God.
The Bible says to “Rejoice with those who rejoice…” (Romans 12:15)
When I’m content with who God made me to be, and what He has (or has not) given me, I’m free to truly rejoice with others over their blessings.
